From 16th January 1957, the hospital came to be known as The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER). The institute was inaugurated by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India, on 16th January, 1957. Since then the institute is best known as a Medical Learning Center of Excellence and a Specialty Hospital, with the following objectives:
To foster spirit of research in fundamental and applied problems in medicine and also to train young post graduates in the spirit and methodology of research.

Founded in the year 1925 in Patna, with 35 students on the rolls was earlier known as PRINCE OF WALES MEDICAL COLLEGE. It was the sixth and one of the oldest medical colleges in undivided India. The number of annual admissions went up to 170, and is presently 100 only. The post graduates are 462. The hospital has 1760 beds.The alumni of Patna Medical college have occupied prestigious positions both in India and abroad. The WHO has selected PMCH as one of the ten medical colleges in the country for implementation of hospital waste management project.

The People’s College of Medical Sciences & Research Centre is affiliated to Barkut-ul-lah University, Bhopal. The college is the result of untiring efforts of the Sarvajanik Jankalyan Parmarthik Nyas. The Nyas has identified Healthcare & Education as a tool for its humble contribution towards the betterment of mankind.

Institute of Medical Sciences & SUM Hospital has been set up in 2003 and Govt. of India through Health and Family Welfare Department permit to take admission for MBBS from the academic session 2007-08.ITER was established in the academic year 1996-97 to offer Engineering (B. Tech. & M.Tech.) and MCA programmes , IBCS in 1998-99 to offer MBA programme, SPS in 2003-04 to offer B.
